Pelion, the Mountain of the Centaurs

Pelion is located in Central Greece, in the prefecture of Magnesia in Thessaly. It forms a peninsula washed by the Pagasetic Gulf to the west and the Aegean Sea to the east. It forms a peninsula washed by the Pagasetic Gulf to the west and the Aegean Sea to the east. It is one of the most complete and enchanting destinations in Greece, as it uniquely combines the lush green mountain with the blue of the sea.

Touring with a 9-seater minivan offers the necessary comfort and flexibility for the region's demanding, winding mountain routes.

From Thessaloniki: The distance is about 215 km. The route is via the Athens-Thessaloniki National Road (E75) and takes about 2.5 hours.

Major Attractions & Museums

  • Makrinitsa ("The Balcony of Pelion"): It offers a breathtaking panoramic view of Volos and the Pagasetic Gulf. It has a beautiful central square, the "Liontaria" (Lions) fountain with the immortal water, and the Museum of Byzantine Art and Culture.
  • Tsagarada: Famous for the thousand-year-old plane tree in the square of Agia Paraskevi, one of the oldest in Europe.
  • Milies & the "Moutzouris": Here is the historic station of the legendary steam train of Pelion. In Milies it is worth visiting the historic church of the Pammegiston Taxiarchon (Archangels) (1741) with its astonishing acoustics, and the Folklore Museum of Milies.
  • Vyzitsa & Pinakates: Two gem-like villages, declared listed heritage sites, ideal for tourists to admire the authentic Pelion architecture.

The Magical Beaches of Pelion

Because the mountain "falls" into the sea, the beaches have a unique beauty with emerald-green waters:

  • Mylopotamos (Eastern Pelion): The most famous and most-photographed beach, with a characteristic natural stone arch that divides the shore in two.
  • Fakistra: A small, wild and secluded bay with azure waters, often included in the lists of the most beautiful hidden beaches in the world.
  • Agioi Saranta & Chorefto: Large, sandy beaches with easy access, organised beach bars and excellent facilities.
  • Damouchari: A picturesque little harbour with large white pebbles (where scenes for the film Mamma Mia were shot).

Gastronomy & Local Cuisine

Pelion cuisine is based on the pure ingredients of the mountain and the forests:

  • Spetzofai: the signature dish of the region, made with local village sausage, peppers and tomato sauce.
  • Bean Soup & Greens Pies: Traditional pies with handmade pastry and wild mountain greens.
  • Tsipouradika: Although they are a trademark of Volos, the culture of tsipouro accompanied by seafood mezze is also strong in the seaside villages of Pelion.
  • Spoon Sweets: Do not forget to suggest that tourists try the firiki spoon sweet (a local variety of small apple) and the chestnut spoon sweet.
