Chalkidiki Beaches (1st & 2nd Leg)

Chalkidiki is one of Greece's top tourist paradises, famous for its unique shape with three peninsulas (Kassandra, Sithonia, Athos), ideally combining the lush green of the pine trees with the boundless blue of the Aegean.

Every year it welcomes hundreds of thousands of tourists from Greece and abroad, offering everything from cosmopolitan resorts and vibrant nightlife to traditional mountain settlements and the deep devotion of Mount Athos.

Geographic Location & Access

• Location: It lies on the southern side of Central Macedonia and is washed by the Aegean Sea.
• Capital: Polygyros, built amphitheatrically on the foothills of Mount Cholomontas, is the administrative and economic centre of the prefecture.
• Distance from Thessaloniki: Polygyros is about 70 kilometres from the centre of Thessaloniki, while access to the peninsulas is easy by road.

Chalkidiki is a colourful mosaic of dreamy beaches, deep blue waters and lush green forests, where every corner hides a distinctive experience and enchants the visitor from the very first moment. Each of its peninsulas has something different to offer: from the cosmopolitan life of Kassandra and the paradisiacal nature of Sithonia, to the imposing silence, the spirituality and the awe of Mount Athos.

Three Peninsulas: Where the land kisses the sea

Kassandra (1st leg)

The most cosmopolitan peninsula, with countless hotels, luxury resorts, organised beach bars and vibrant nightlife (mainly in Kallithea, Chaniotis and Pefkochori).

Kassandra of Chalkidiki is a worldwide tourist destination with the historic Kassandreia (Valta) as its administrative capital. It is famous for its exotic beaches, such as the impressive Ammoglossa at Possidi with its shifting strip of sand and Krousso at Paliouri with its fine golden sand and pine forest, while it also offers magical sunsets that "plunge" into the sea on its western side, at Siviri and Fourka.

The ultimate jewel of the peninsula is the traditional Afytos (or Athytos), a picturesque village built upon a steep rock-balcony with a breathtaking view of the Toroneos Gulf, which enchants visitors with its restored stone mansions, the cobbled alleys, the characteristic flower pots made of painted tin cans, the historic Church of Agios Dimitrios (1859), the local Folklore Museum, as well as the crystal-clear beaches "Varkes" and "Liosi" located right below the settlement.

Sithonia (2nd leg)

It is the second "leg" of the peninsula and is known for the combination of its lush green pine forest with its azure beaches, crystal-clear waters and the tranquillity of nature. It offers a more nature-loving and relaxed atmosphere compared to cosmopolitan Kassandra.

It is renowned for its turquoise beaches reminiscent of the Caribbean (e.g. Kavourotrypes, Vourvourou) and the dense pine forest that reaches down to the waves.

Athos / Mount Athos (3rd leg)

Mount Athos, or "the Garden of the Virgin Mary", is an autonomous monastic state with a thousand-year history and 20 sovereign monasteries.

Ouranoupoli is the gateway, from where small boats depart to transport pilgrims, as well as cruise ships that allow women too to admire the monasteries from the sea due to the Avaton (the prohibition of entry to women). On Athos, absolute devotion prevails through the strict ascetic life of the monks, who live with unceasing prayer, all-night services and complete isolation from the modern world.

Mountainous Chalkidiki & Natural Attractions

The Village of Aristotle (Ancient Stagira): Ancient Stagira of Chalkidiki, founded in 655 BC on the Liotopi peninsula (next to present-day Olympiada), is the historic birthplace of Aristotle and the place where excavations revealed his impressive Tomb-Heroon. Although the city was destroyed by Philip II, he later rebuilt it to honour the philosopher and teacher of Alexander the Great. Today, the legacy of the great scholar lives on both in the seaside archaeological site with its Byzantine walls and in the nearby, mountainous modern village of Stagira, where the Aristotle's Grove operates with interactive physics instruments.

Varvara Waterfalls: In the mountainous northern part of Chalkidiki, hidden within a dense forest of beech and chestnut trees, between Varvara and Olympiada, lie the two impressive waterfalls! The route is along a short, easy and signposted path (about 5-10 minutes' walk).

Traditional Villages: Settlements such as Arnaia (declared a "Historic Site") enchant with their Macedonian architecture, their stone mansions, the cobbled streets and the rich gastronomic tradition.

History, Museums & Caves:

• Petralona Cave: World-famous for its impressive stalactite decoration and the discovery of the skull of the Archanthropus of Petralona, one of the oldest human findings in Europe.
• Byzantine Tower of Nea Fokaia (Tower of Saint Paul): It dominates the hill above the harbour and is one of the best-preserved towers in Chalkidiki, connected with the revolution of 1821.
• The small church and the Cave (Holy Water Shrine) of Saint Paul in Nea Fokaia: It is one of the most important religious, historical and archaeological monuments of Kassandra. It is located at the entrance of the village, right across from the picturesque little harbour and the imposing Byzantine Tower.
• Archaeological Sites: Ancient Olynthos (with the oldest known mosaic floors in Greece) and the Sanctuary of Ammon Zeus at Kallithea attest to the rich historical past of the region.

Culture, Festivals & Local Traditions:

• Summer Festivals: The Kassandra Festival (at the amphitheatre of Siviri) and the Sani Festival attract international and Greek artists of theatre, jazz and contemporary music every year.
• Sardine Festival: Held every summer in Nea Moudania, where plenty of free fish and wine are offered, accompanied by traditional dances.

Local Products & Occupations:

• Olives: Chalkidiki is widely known for its large green olives and its excellent virgin olive oil, with the autumn harvest being a key agricultural activity.
• Honey: The region (and especially Arnaia and Nikiti) is considered the "capital of honey" in Greece. In Arnaia you can even experience beekeeping.

Activities & Wellness:

• Water Sports: Sailing, windsurfing, diving and SUP are available at all the major organised beaches.
• Thalassotherapy Centre: In Agia Paraskevi (Kassandra) the thermal baths (Thermal Spa) operate, known for the therapeutic properties of their sulphurous waters, offering relaxation with a view of the Aegean.
